Through an integrated solar + storage solution, RENOPI is bringing clean, reliable power to local cold chain facilities, solving one of the region’s biggest agricultural challenges. This project not only reflects RENOPI’s active support for the Belt and Road Initiative, but also marks a key step in expanding its presence across Southeast Asia.
Sweet Fame, Hidden Challenges
Chanthaburi accounts for over 70% of Thailand’s total durian output. Yet behind the sweetness lies a tough reality. During harvest season, the market becomes oversaturated, causing prices to plunge. Farmers rely on cold storage to preserve their durians, but these facilities face high energy costs and unstable power supply. A single blackout can lead to tons of spoiled fruit, resulting in severe financial loss. Stabilizing electricity access and lowering energy costs has become crucial for improving the region’s agricultural resilience.
Solar + Storage: Powering a Green Cold Chain Revolution
Understanding the unique needs of the region, RENOPI designed a tailored solar + storage system for the central durian cold storage facilities in Chanthaburi. This smart solution provides stable, sustainable power by maximizing the use of solar energy and storing excess electricity for nighttime use. The system helps cut electricity bills, extend the freshness of durians, and improve the overall economic return for local growers.
Unlike traditional systems that feed power directly into the grid, this project adopts a self-consumption + storage model. During the day, solar power is generated and stored; at night, stored energy is discharged to ensure round-the-clock operation. With peak shaving and valley filling, the system charges using cheaper off-peak electricity and discharges during peak demand, helping owners recover their investment within three years.
Thanks to RENOPI’s green energy system, power reliability has drastically improved, durians stay fresh longer, and farmers can sell at better prices by staggering market entry. On top of that, the solution eliminates the need for diesel generators, reducing carbon emissions and supporting Thailand’s sustainability goals.
